Annamie Paul met her husband, Toronto native Mark Freeman, in law school at the University of Ottawa. Paul and Freeman, who is a human rights lawyer, married in 1996. They have two children, Malachai and Jonas. Paul converted to her husband’s faith of Judaism while at Princeton under the teaching of rabbi and fellow Canadian Jim Diamond. Paul is the daughter of immigrants to Canada, who moved from the Caribbean in the 1960s. Paul discusses her family’s history proudly. Her mother was a teacher for more than 30 years, and her grandmother was a nurse’s aid. Paul is committed to diversity in politics, in addition to her commitment to the environment. Diversity means having people from different backgrounds and beliefs. Paul has been married to her husband, fellow lawyer Mark Freeman, for 24 years. They have two children.
