Rocket Punch’s Sohee’s Pre-Debut

Seeing Sohee’s profile and the list of interesting facts about her, you are probably wondering why did Sohee end up becoming a K-pop idol? Was she actually fond of singing and dancing just like some other K-pop idols? Or did she just accidentally get here without expecting it? Well, instead of just wondering, let’s get to know the pre-debut story of Sohee from Rocket Punch down below! As you may have already seen on her profile, Sohee was born in Osaka, Japan. However, she didn’t grow up there. When she was 3 months old, Sohee moved to Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do. Sohee was born in Osaka because her father was working there. That’s why Sohee has Korean as her mother tongue. But still, Sohee tried really hard to learn Japanese. She also often practices Japanese with her mother and father who used to live there. Some taxi drivers have mistaken her for Japanese when she is talking in Japanese with her parents. Growing up, Sohee was surrounded by Japanese culture. She learned Kendo when she was in elementary school. She started when she was in the second grade of elementary school. Sohee studied Kendo for six years and was in the black belt level. That’s why we see Kendo as one of her specialties. Seems like she still remembers it all even though it has been years. Seeing how Sohee was fond of Kendo, Sohee herself probably didn’t expect that she will be a K-pop idol later. But the fact that K-pop is growing really big lately, she tried to join an open audition for a K-pop agency in 2017. Sohee was having a dilemma between choosing Cube Entertainment or Woollim Entertainment. But she ended up choosing Woollim Entertainment because she was feeling that Woollim Entertainment might be the one that is destined for her. And it turned out to be true after all. Sohee’s audition for Woollim Entertainment went really well. She sang a song from solo singer Ailee, “I Will Go to You Like the First Snow”. And she got accepted as a trainee of Woollim Entertainment starting in September 2017.

Rocket Punch’s Sohee in Produce 48

After officially becoming a trainee, it only took months for Sohee to be included in the line-up for Produce 48 participants. As you may or may not already know, Produce 48 or Produce 101 Season 3 was a survival show that was aired on Mnet in 2018. It was a show that had a hundred participants only some of which will later on debut into a temporary group that consists of 11 to 12 members. In this season, Produce 48 was a collaboration between the Korean entertainment industry and the Japanese entertainment industry. The trainees that became participants were a combination of Korean trainees and Japanese idols from 48 groups. Since the participants were from both countries, there was a translator for the Japanese participants, since the trainers were Korean. That probably is the reason why Sohee was included since she has good Japanese skills. She could capture the fans from Korea, Japan, and of course, overseas. Because of her Japanese skills, she made friends with Japanese participants too. In the video introduction, Sohee showed her kendo skills.
