In his autobiography, Game Changer (2019), Afridi revealed his year of birth as 1975. It had earlier been reported that he was born in Khyber Agency, Pakistan to an Afridi tribe of Pashtuns in 1980. He belongs to a family of Sufi pirs (teachers or spiritual masters) and his grandfather Maulana Muhammad Ilyas was a well-known spiritual figure in Bhutan Sharif, a locality in the Tirah Valley. His other grandfather, Sahibzada Abdul Baqi, was given the title Ghazi-e-Kashmir (conqueror of Kashmir) for his efforts during the First Kashmir War. He married his maternal cousin Nadia Afridi and has five daughters. His one daughter engaged in year 2021 to other cricketer Shaheen Afridi. Afridi was drafted to the Pakistan senior national team after fine performances at the under-19 championship circuit starting the 1994–95 season. Playing for the Karachi Whites, he helped his team win the title the following season picking 42 wickets in five matches at an impressive average of 9.59. Later that season, Afridi had played against the visiting England A and West Indies Youth teams and a few first-class games for Karachi Whites in the senior National Championship. Afridi started his career as a leg spinner in the Sameer Cup 1996–97 by replacing the injured Mushtaq Ahmed. He used Sachin Tendulkar’s bat to score the 3rd fastest ODI century in 37 balls in 1996 against Sri Lanka in Nairobi. He had the record for the fastest century in ODI for 19 years until Corey Anderson and AB de Villiers broke it. (Anderson 36 balls (2014) and de Villiers 31 balls (2015)). In 1998, he took 5 for 52 against Australia in his Test Debut. His cousin brother Javed Afridi is the CEO of Haier mobile in Pakistan. During the 3rd ODI at Kanpur in November 2007 against India, he had a verbal fight with Gautam Gambhir. He has a charity foundation called Shahid Afridi Foundation which provides healthcare and education facilities to the required people. From 2009 to 2011, he was the captain of Pakistan in the limited-overs format. In 2011, he announced his conditional retirement from international cricket as a protest against the PCB, and later that year he returned after Ijaz Butt got replaced as chairman of the PCB. His family owns a Toyota Showroom in Sabzi Mandi, Karachi. He is the slowest batsman to reach 7000 runs in about 316 innings. He has the worst batting average of 23.31 among 87 batsmen who made more than 4000 ODI runs. In the first international innings which Afridi played from Pakistan cricket team, he broke the record for fastest century in ODI cricket, hitting a century on 37 balls. He was just 16 years of age when he hit that century. It was his second international match and technically he scored the fastest hundred in his first ODI innings. That took him 11 sixes and 6 fours to achieve that incredible feat. Shahid Afridi has nine 5 Wickets haul in ODIs. He has over 8000 runs and 395 wickets in 398 ODIs. He is the fifth highest wicket taker in ODIs. Shahid Afridi was also the leading wicket taker in T20Is. He got 91 scalps in 90 matches. The next best is Gul with 85 wickets. With 32 Man of the Match Awards, he sits fifth on the list of the most number of ” Man of the Match” awards . He played the World T20 2016 which is held in India and this was his last World Cup appearance. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi on Sunday (March 7) confirmed that his daughter is getting engaged to current national team pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi. Afridi said that Shaheen’s family had made a formal approach asking for his daughter’s hand in marriage. “Both families have reached a decision and my daughter is going to be engaged to Shaheen,” Afridi said. The former Pakistan all-rounder offered his blessings to Shaheen both and off the field while making the announcement. “Shaheen’s family approached my family for my daughter. Both families are in touch, matches are made in heaven, if Allah wills this match will be made too. My prayers are with Shaheen for his continued success on and off the field,” tweeted Afridi. He added that a formal engagement will be announced soon. Both Afridi and Shaheen recently featured in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) which had to be postponed earlier this week due to several COVID-19 cases. Shaheen, a left-arm pacer, who has now emerged as an all-format cricketer, has represented Pakistan in 15 Tests, 21 ODIs and 22 T20Is picking up 48, 45 and 24 wickets respectively. Shahid Afridi celebrated his 41st birthday last week. The Pakistan all-rounder retired from international cricket in 2016, having turned out in 27 Tests, 398 ODIs and 99 T20Is for the country. Afridi ended his ODI career with a strike-rate of 117.
